Please Help Lake Charles, Louisiana A Community Voice organize for safety and help for Hurricane Laura survivors

Lake Charles A Community Voice leader Mark Thibodeaux asks ACV to do all we can for SW Louisianans affected by the upcoming hurricane.

Hurricane Laura landfall is expected due south of Lake Charles, LA around 1 a.m. Thursday. There is a wide industrialized waterway that leads directly from the Gulf of Mexico to the city of Lake Charles, itself built around a large estuary, originally named Lac du Charles. After H. Rita, members of ACORN in North Lake Charles’ African American working and poor communities were badly flooded and needed assistance. By now we know plenty about what we can do to help and the Lake Charles members will tell us, too. It starts with organizing the residents to have a voice and a way to receive help.

Please contact us about where to send all volunteer supplies, help, etc. Donations can be made through the acommunityvoice.org donate button. Email bethbutler.south@gmail.com, messages at 800-239-7379.

Looking for more ideas and ways to help, please contact us.
Any info or strategies on how to test the water and soil is urgently needed. Lake Charles is surrounded by a vast array of petro-chemical industry, all in the hurricane’s pathway too. If you can generate some help on this, Thank you.

Friday August 28, 6:30 p.m.
Community Conference Call with Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana members of A Community Voice / ACORN
To register for the phone call, residents who are asked to please leave your name and phone number at 800-239-7379
You will receive a text and or a phone call to give you the dial-in number for the Friday phone conference.
Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter will provide a list of resources for residents and we will be prepared to answer questions.

Please share this info.
Thanks everyone, fingers crossed!
Prayers and healing vibes can go straight to those in need.

A Community Voice Statement on the Officer Shooting of Juston Landry in North Lake Charles

A Community Voice/Louisiana ACORN has had an agreement since 2004 with the Lake Charles Police Department in regards to the protocol around allegations of police brutality and racial profiling. This agreement has protected the rights of all residents of Lake Charles and prevented the highly publicized use and abuse of excessive police force. The protocol involves a procedure for investigations of police misconduct by multiple entities, as well as a procedure for filing additional complaints if the results of such investigations are left unresolved.  This agreement involves the use of dash cams at all times by officers. Failure to use dash cams or any officer turning off dash cams would be in violation of this agreement.

We are heart-broken that a resident of Lake Charles has been killed by a law enforcement officer who is first and foremost in a position to serve and protect.  A Community Voice has fought long and hard to prevent such incidents from occurring in Lake Charles. We believe that other means besides deadly force should always be the focus of all police training procedures.  As all of you, we are anxiously awaiting the results of the investigations and will work to mitigate any remaining conflicts between law enforcement and the community to prevent such incidents in the future.

In addition, A Community Voice is actively working across the state to reduce discrimination that includes the gross racial disparities in treatment and interventions within our criminal justice system and the lack of mental health care that has increased the number of individuals incarcerated or suffering from substance abuse issues in our State.

We are awaiting the results of the official investigation from the Louisiana State Troopers before filing additional complaints regarding this incident. However, no one should ever be shot in the back by a law enforcement officer regardless of the circumstances and expect all findings to correlate with this view. Please call A Community Voice at 337-707-1517 for more information.

Lanny Roy and the Lake Charles Housing Program

Written by Tarek Polite for A Community Voice Lake Charles Housing Program Curriculum Pack

Mr. Lanny Roy

A Community Voice-President

The ACV homebuyer education is a unique program.  The program was started over 25 years ago by Mr. Lanny Roy due to the lack of financial literacy in the low-income community. The program operates on a semester basis which is comprised of a six month period.  Classes are held monthly on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Lake Charles city hall from 6:30pm-8:00pm.  A participant’s success is determined by their credit history demonstrated by a clean slate with all three major credit reporting bureaus and completion of all the courses taught during a semester. Upon completion of both of these requirements, participants receive a diploma demonstrating their completion of the program.  Generally, upon receiving their diploma, participants may be eligible for assistance with down payment and closing cost through the City of Lake Charles which is subject to fund availability.

Through this program countless numbers of individuals and families have successfully moved into homeownership.  Additionally for his work, Mr. Roy is known nationally and internationally having received numerous awards and accolades for his accomplishments working with low and minority communities for over 50 years as a community organizer and activist.Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Save Moss Memorial Health Clinic in Lake Charles

Governor John Bel Edwards

Office of the Governor
PO Box 94004
Baton Rouge, LA 70

CC: Senate Finance Committee

To: Governor John Bel Edwards,

Re: House Bill 1

We are writing to express our grave concerns about the proposed cuts in funding to the W.O. Moss Memorial Health Clinic.   Please veto this bill if it passes the legislature.

As you know, Governor Bobby Jindal privatized our charity care system and closed down W.O. Moss Memorial Hospital.  The closure of this hospital has adversely impacted the lives and health of Calcasieu parish residents.  As it is, the reductions affect many of us.  Those who can travel to Shreveport, like myself, have to pay for drivers and other costs of travel in addition to making the difficult trip itself.  Then, many are forced to pay to travel to other parts of the state.  All of us who travel and pay both financially and through physical hardship do this because health care is how we stay alive.  Our hospitals save our lives.

Closing down this clinic will remove the limited existing access to health care services, increase the cost to those who are already poor, including the elderly, disabled and families.

As lauded as has been the expansion of the petro chemical industry in Calcasieu, you know the increase in the sheer population of local residents has also increased the burden on our health care system, and we therefore require more health services, not less.

Sincerely,

Lanny Roy

President

Message from ACV President Lanny Roy on Fighting for Adequate Flood Protections

Recently, A Community Voice members in Louisiana worked hard with the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) and won exclusion of a dangerous provision to restructure Mitigation funds that had been inserted in the House version of the federal Disaster Supplemental bill that would have diverted funding from the Hazard Mitigation Grants Program/ (FEMA), which buys out flooded homes and elevates home in flooded areas.  This was a great victory for the people. While we thank those Senators who removed the poisonous provisions from the bill, our communities do still need adequate flood protection.

A Community Voice members and others are now calling their US Senators to promote no building in flood plains, a requirement for all cities to enroll in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), funding for states to implement flood-control infrastructure measures such as levees, elevation projects, drainage, pumping systems and full funding to restore Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands, now languishing without adequate rebuilding funds.
